Self-Awareness Means Understanding How Other People See You - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness Means Understanding How Other People See You

A major part of self-awareness is understanding how other people see you. This means that you clearly comprehend how your thoughts and actions affect not only you but others as well. When you understand the impact you have on others you can make the appropriate changes so that you get better results. The key is to be yourself and allow others to do the same. Here are some signs that you possess the self-awareness necessary to understand how other people see you:

  • You’re not constantly in the middle of conflicts.
  • Other people seem to like you.
  • You build positive relationships.
  • You behave with kindness, empathy, and compassion.
  • You don’t do things to hurt others.
  • You don’t care about competition.
  • You don’t have a massive, unhealthy, out of control ego.
  • You do things that benefit others.
  • You behave selflessly, without expecting something in return.

10 Examples of Self-Awareness - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

10 Examples of Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is a state of being that is achieved when you deeply understand your own thoughts, emotions and behaviors. It’s the difference between living a conscious and unconscious life: In one case, you do things purposefully and with an understanding of yourself and other people and in the other you just kind of wing it.

Here are ten examples of self-awareness:

  • You’re able to recognize, monitor, and modulate your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • You’ve worked on resolving the difficult issues from your upbringing.
  • You’re comfortable in your own skin.
  • You’re able to build positive relationships with others.
  • You can empathize with others.
  • You treat people with kindness and respect.
  • You don’t fly off the handle.
  • Your general mood is positive and upbeat.
  • Difficult situations don’t destroy you because you’re aware of your abilities to overcome them.
  • You feel, think, and act in ways you can be proud of.

People run into all kinds of difficulties when they lack self-awareness because their thoughts, emotions and behaviors not only affect them but also others. When you achieve self-awareness you understand yourself to the point where you can consciously decide what you think, feel and do.

Guy

Advantages of Self-Awareness - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Advantages of Self-Awareness

I’m often asked what are the advantages of self-awareness. It’s almost impossible to overestimate the impact self-awareness can have on someone’s life, here are some of the advantages I’ve noticed through years of working with people and organizations over the years:

  • An ability to understand one’s own thoughts, feelings, and actions and manage them positively.
  • Understanding why other people think, feel, and act the way they do.
  • Ability to empathize and practice compassion toward others.
  • Identifying your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Living your life more authentically because you understand who you really are deep inside.
  • Thinking and behaving more positively because you’ve worked through your stuff.
  • Being more open to new information, experiences, and change.
  • Choosing positive friends and significant others.
  • Being a better leader at work because you’re not working out your issues on others.
  • Feeling more balanced and together.
  • A sense of deeper understanding of yourself and your path in life.
  • A more meaningful and fulfilling life.

There’s no mystery to self-awareness, it’s simply a tool that helps you know so much about yourself that you literally become a happier, more effective human being which, in turn, positively affects you and the people around you. When you possess self-awareness you tap into a stream of consciousness and knowledge that helps you treat yourself and others better, as well as allowing you to make the world a better place. What would you add to this list?

Self-Awareness and Trusting Your Inner Voice - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness and Trusting Your Inner Voice

Nothing is a beautiful as the voice inside you. Pay attention to it and you’ll live a life of great self-awareness, success and happiness. Ignore it and you’ll move in a very different direction. Your inner voice is that part of you that tells you what you really want to do in life and who you are deep inside.

Self-awareness means paying attention to your inner voice as it guides you toward living authentically and making your dreams come true. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to begin discovering your true path:

  1. If I could choose any career in life what would it be?
  2. What is the talent I possess that I could use to bring joy into my life?
  3. What message(s) is my inner voice sending me?
  4. How would my life be different if I listened to my inner voice?
  5. What will I commit to doing today to achieve what my inner voice tells me to?

As you answer these questions you’ll begin thinking more deeply about the things you find meaningful and fulfilling. Imagine living your life based on what you want to do rather than settling for whatever comes your way or what other people tell you to do. What will you do to listen to your inner voice?

Self-Awareness and Being Unhelpful - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness and Being Unhelpful

The more self-awareness you have, the happier you are and the more you move away from being unhelpful when others need assistance. There are many instances where people don’t help each other very much or choose to interact negatively, for example:

  • Pointing out what’s going wrong instead of what is going well.
  • Criticizing instead of offering solutions.
  • Talking over people.
  • Making sarcastic or sardonic remarks.
  • Taking a lot of time to explain why they can’t do something rather than doing it.
  • Finding ways to not help.
  • Acting like a know-it-all and making people feel inadequate.

As you gain more self-awareness you move away from these types of behaviors because you realize that other people are valuable, and you do things like:

  • Highlight what is going well.
  • Offer solutions.
  • Listen.
  • Make positive remarks.
  • Do something helpful instead of talking about what you can’t do.
  • Find ways to help.
  • Behave in ways that are kind and helpful.

There is a vast difference between the first list and the second list; one hurts people and creates conflict and the other encourages relationship building. You get to choose which path you take. Self-awareness means you understand how important it is to treat everyone with respect and care. What will you do to be more helpful?

Guy
