What Is Self-Awareness and Are You Self-Aware?

Self-awareness is a significant part of personal development and it refers to being aware of how your thoughts and behaviors affect you and others. Many people are aware enough to identify things that need attention in their lives but they forget to take action to make it happen. There’s a big difference between knowing you do something and understanding it well enough to move it in a positive direction. Here are some signs you’re self-aware:

  • You’re able to deal with and direct your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • You build positive relationships, including the one you have with yourself.
  • You genuinely like yourself and others do as well.
  • You live life based on what you really love doing.
  • You know yourself well.
  • You treat yourself and others with kindness and empathy.
  • You understand how the things you feel, think, and do affect you and others.

Self-Awareness and Balance - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness and Balance

Self-awareness helps you maintain balance between the various parts of your life because you’re able to step back and assess what you’re doing at any given moment. Many people live their entire lives without taking the time to examine their thoughts and actions and the reasons behind them. When you consciously and continuously review what you’re doing, you’re able to deal with a range of issues in your life, especially the difficult ones.

Putting off dealing with unpleasant or scary situations creates a lack of harmony in your life because, if you don’t fix things, they don’t go away. The irony is that, if you decide to resolve the challenges in your life instead of avoiding them or pretending they don’t exist, you give yourself the opportunity to live more meaningfully and happily.

Balance is about understanding that you are made up of different facets and that they all require attention to be healthy and happy. What will you do to invite balance into your life?

The Peace of Mind of Self-Awareness - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

The Peace of Mind of Self-Awareness

Self-awareness can bring you amazing peace of mind if you let it. The challenge is being able to let go of all the noise and obstacles that get in the way of learning about yourself and living authentically. A lot of people struggle with the idea that there is a different way of living where they get to be themselves and enjoy the results they get from thinking, feeling and acting naturally.

You can start increasing your peace of mind and self-awareness by taking time each day to think about your strengths and areas for improvement. Celebrate the wonderful things about you and also work on one thing you’d like to improve. Repeat the process and, along the way, you’ll discover more and more about your amazing gifts. What will you do to increase your self-awareness?

It Takes Self-Awareness to Look at Yourself - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

It Takes Self-Awareness to Look at Yourself

There are many individuals who construct idealized versions of themselves to avoid having to look at how they really think and behave and the results they’re getting. It takes self-awareness to look at yourself, admit that something isn’t working and change direction. Here are some questions to ask yourself to stop fighting the facts and live based on what’s actually going on in your life and what you’re capable of doing:

  • What do I do in my life that causes me discomfort?
  • What can I do to let go of the things that cause me discomfort?
  • What would I change about myself to feel more comfortable?
  • What can I do to focus on my own behaviors rather than what other people do?
  • What patterns in my life would I change so I could be happier?
  • What am I willing to do to move in a positive direction?
  • What’s my plan for letting go of the thoughts and behaviors that don’t help me?
  • What will I do to be the same person privately and publicly?
  • What will I do to live authentically?

No amount of fighting the facts can change the reality of how you behave and the results you get in life. Take some time to answer questions like the ones I’ve suggested here and get to know yourself on a deeper level so you can live authentically and happily. Life is much more rewarding when you take a good look at yourself and follow your true path.

You Decide What Self-Awareness Is - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

You Decide What Self-Awareness Is

Self-awareness is whatever you decide you want it to be based on what’s important to you and how you want to grow. It’s often the process of identifying areas in your life that you want to improve and taking action to make things happen. Self-awareness is most challenging when you’re uncomfortable in some way and genuinely motivated to change your thoughts or behaviors. You have to be ready to address the issue and willing to work on it until you generate positive results.

It’s advisable to approach self-awareness as an ongoing process rather than a quick fix. Deeper change requires long-term commitment and effort but it doesn’t have to be complicated. All you have to do is be willing to take a look at yourself, warts and all. The process of getting to know who you really are is what eventually leads to happiness and fulfillment. A great way to get the process started is to picture what your ideal life would be and pursue one small thing each day to achieve your dreams. If you have emotions, thoughts, or behaviors that get in the way, be willing to examine them and work on shifting them in a positive direction. Self-awareness isn’t something that occurs overnight, it’s a journey of self-discovery where you make all the decisions about where you want to go.

Self-Awareness, Success, and Gratitude - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness, Success, and Gratitude

Self-awareness, success, and gratitude are interconnected because you can’t do everything on your own in the world, you need the help of other people. Perhaps you’ve met someone who insists that he (or she) is successful solely because of his own efforts, which conveniently ignores things like:

  • The countless people around him who assisted.
  • The people who made it easier to be successful.
  • The systems in place that allowed him to be successful.
  • The physical infrastructure in place that increased the likelihood of success.
  • The laws in place that allowed for success.
  • The available body of knowledge, often developed by others, so that not every step along the way would have to be invented from scratch.
  • The favorable, chance occurrences that helped along the way.

People who possess a high level of self-awareness understand that, while they play a large part in being successful in their lives, they also rely on an extensive and interdependent system to support their efforts.

The key to living a healthy, self-aware life is to realize that being successful includes being grateful for all the positive support you’ve received over the years from many sources and giving back precisely because it could not have happened without the many people and fortuitous conditions involved. What will you do to express your gratitude for your success?

Self-Awareness and Fear - On Developing Self-Awareness and Being Self-Aware

Self-Awareness and Fear

Many people live in fear rather than actively working on increasing their self-awareness so they can live more courageously and happily. When you know yourself deep inside you have the power to resolve the issues that scare you rather than repeating them unconsciously. Here are some of the signs of living in fear:

  • Afraid of new experiences.
  • Fear of people who are perceived as different.
  • Resistance to new ideas or change.
  • Strict adherence to routines.
  • Mistrust of anyone not in one’s inner circle.
  • Constant feeling of lack of safety.
  • Uncomfortable with uncertainty.
  • Lashing out toward people and things perceived as threats.
  • Reluctance to acknowledge or heal inner hurts.

People don’t do these things because they feel happy and balanced inside, they perpetuate them because they don’t know what else to do. Thankfully, there are ways to alleviate fear and they all start with the person’s willingness to change direction. Eliminating fear is a gradual process where the person in question deliberately decides to move in a positive direction and replace the old thoughts, feelings and actions with new ones that aren’t based on anxiety or alarm. What will you do to not live in fear?
